Melt blown nonwovens (also known as melt blown nonwovens and melt blown fabrics) have the characteristics of fine fiber, large specific surface area, small porosity and large porosity. They can be used as materials for sound absorption, heat preservation, filtration, oil absorption and cleaning. They are widely used in medical and health, industry, home life, military, aviation and other fields.

Enterprise conversion, capacity expansion or new melt blown cloth project

In 2019, there were 61 continuous melt blown nonwovens factories and 137 production lines in China, with a production capacity of about 83000 T / A and an actual output of about 57000 T / A, accounting for only about 1% of the total nonwovens output in China. On the whole, China's meltblown cloth market presents a pattern of competition among private enterprises, joint ventures, state-owned capital holdings, foreign-funded enterprises and so on. On the basis of introducing and absorbing foreign technology, domestic enterprises have developed rapidly in recent years. However, compared with multinational enterprises such as the United States and Japan, domestic melt blown cloth manufacturers are characterized by backward technology, inefficient equipment, small production scale and scattered production capacity. Their business is mainly focused on better application of melt blown cloth in downstream products, and do not have the production capacity of upstream raw materials, There is no whole industry chain development enterprise, and the overall competitiveness of the industry is not strong. Most multinational enterprises are from the chemical industry. Their business and technology often focus on the technical innovation and industrial mass production of melt blown cloth base materials, and extend to the downstream consumer end. The development mode of the whole industrial chain in the upstream, middle and downstream has obvious characteristics.

The outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia has caused the demand for medical protective materials such as respirators to skyrocket. The demand for melted cloth, which is the important raw material for masks, has increased rapidly, and supply is in short supply. Some enterprises change production, expand capacity or build new melt blown cloth projects. Sinopec invested about 200 million yuan to build 10 melt blown cloth production lines in Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical and Jiangsu Yizheng Chemical fiber enterprises. The design capacity of Yanshan Petrochemical production line is 14400 tons / year, including 2 melt blown cloth production lines and 3 spunbonded cloth production lines. It can produce 4 tons of N95 mask melt blown cloth or 6 tons of medical plane mask melt blown cloth and 42 tons of spunbonded cloth every day. The project has produced qualified products on March 6. Another eight melt blown cloth production lines of SINOPEC are being accelerated in Yizheng, Jiangsu, with a total capacity of 4000 tons / year. They are expected to be completed and put into operation in mid April. The construction of four melt blown cloth production lines of PetroChina is also fully carried out in Liaoyang Petrochemical and Lanzhou Petrochemical respectively. It is expected to be completed in April and form a production capacity of 2200 tons / year.

Nevertheless, on the one hand, due to the high technical content in the production process of melt blown cloth, the high investment cost of the production line, and few domestic manufacturers can provide complete sets of melt blown cloth production equipment and key parts, the delivery cycle and assembly time of imported equipment are relatively long, which limits the rapid growth of melt blown cloth production capacity in the short term. On the other hand, because some enterprises are worried about the real introduction of melt blown cloth production line, the peak demand caused by the epidemic has passed. This concern has also prevented many investors from entering this field. Based on the above factors, it is estimated that the production capacity of melt blown cloth will increase by about 15000 tons in 2020 (including the six production lines planned by SINOPEC), and the production capacity is expected to reach about 100000 tons.

At present, the market demand is still facing a large gap

Under normal circumstances, the demand for meltblown cloth in China is small, and the market is in a tepid state. The demand in 2019 is about 67000 tons / year (as listed in Table 2). Masks account for about 25% of the consumption of melt blown cloth.

The novel coronavirus pneumonia since the beginning of the year has increased demand for medical and health products such as masks and protective clothing. Although the current daily output of masks exceeds 100 million and another 100 million masks are imported / day, the market demand is still facing a large gap. As enterprises resume work and production and students resume school, the demand for masks will rise rapidly. At present, the number of employed people in China is about 770 million, including 9.5 million medical personnel. The total number of students is about 250 million. The following three scenarios are used to reasonably calculate the demand for melt blown cloth.

(1) Only return to work, with a return to work rate of 50%.

380 million medical plane masks and 4.75 million N95 masks are required every day. 300000 N95 masks or 1 million medical plane masks can be produced by 1 ton of melt blown non-woven fabric (calculated according to the following scenarios). 396 tons / day (145000 tons / year) of melt blown non-woven fabric is required, which is nearly 1.2 times longer than the normal scenario. Assuming that the existing production capacity of 83000 T / a (227 T / D) melt blown non-woven fabrics is fully started for mask production, there is still a gap of 169 T / D (62000 T / a).

(2) Only return to work and the return to work rate is 100%.

760 million medical plane masks and 110 million N95 masks are required every day, and 792 tons / day (290000 tons / year) of melt blown non-woven fabric is required, an increase of 3.3 times compared with the normal situation. Assuming that the existing production capacity of 83000 T / a (227 T / D) melt blown non-woven fabrics is fully started for mask production, there is still a gap of 567 T / D (207000 T / a).

(3) The return to work rate and return to school rate are 100%.

1.01 billion medical plane masks and 10 million N95 masks are required every day, and 1042 tons / day (380000 tons / year) of melt blown non-woven fabric is required, an increase of 4.7 times compared with the normal situation. Assuming that the existing production capacity of 83000 T / a (227 T / D) melt blown non-woven fabrics is fully started for mask production, there is still a gap of 814 T / D (297000 T / a).

At present, although the epidemic situation in China has been effectively controlled, the overseas epidemic situation has spread. If it is not effectively curbed in the short term, the demand for melt blown cloth will remain high and even continue to rise in the first half of 2020. However, with the effective control of the epidemic situation, it is expected that the demand for meltblown cloth will gradually return to rationality in the future. However, on the whole, with the expansion of new technologies, new equipment and new application fields in the industry, the demand for melt blown cloth in China will maintain a stable growth trend in the next few years.

Melt blown cloth market demand will return to rationality

To sum up, under normal circumstances, China's melt blown cloth has a certain market space, but it is mainly concentrated in the field of high-end products; Under special situations such as epidemic situation, the supply gap of melt blown cloth is 60000 ~ 300000 tons / year. It is expected that in the future, with the effective control of the epidemic situation, the demand for melt blown cloth will gradually return to rationality, and the overall strength of the industry will be significantly improved. Central enterprises such as Sinopec and PetroChina will form a whole industrial chain development model of polypropylene fiber material melt blown material melt blown cloth upstream, middle and downstream. Process refinement, product functionalization, structure integration, application substitution and market differentiation will become the future development direction of melt blown cloth.

In terms of process technology, melt blown technology involves multi-disciplinary intersection, such as textile, fiber, papermaking, film, composite and other technologies. In the future, the technology R & D direction should be: on the one hand, focus on the R & D of new melt blown technology and the upgrading and transformation of existing technology to realize the integrated development of technologies in the above fields; On the other hand, strengthen the research and development of new raw materials, raw material improvement, formula optimization, etc.

In terms of new product development, in view of the deep subdivision of downstream products of melt blown cloth, first, adhere to the route of product differentiation, especially in the fields of masks, thermal insulation flocs and oil absorbing materials which are widely used traditionally; Second, adhere to the product functional route and give full play to the characteristics of melt blown cloth in antibacterial, breathable, flame retardant and high temperature resistance; Third, adhere to the environmental protection route of products. On the one hand, it is the environmental protection of melt blown raw materials, such as the singleness, recyclability and degradability of raw materials. On the other hand, while achieving the same performance, reduce the unit gram weight.

In terms of downstream user expansion, on the one hand, it is to expand new fields, focus on the uniqueness and high functionality of products, realize the application in new fields and occupy the market; On the other hand, it mainly focuses on the replaceable fields, focusing on low cost and substitutability, so as to meet the product performance in the alternative fields and reduce the production cost of downstream users, such as sound-absorbing materials for highway tunnel construction, water seepage materials for soilless cultivation of flowers, anti-skid and air permeable shoemaking materials and automotive interior materials.
